How to Create an Assignment in PowerTeacher Pro

  • The list of assignments for a class can be viewed by clicking on the Grading charm and selecting Assignment List.

  • In order to create a new assignment, click on the Create button from any screen and select Assignment.

  • Assignment Tab:

  • Classes: You can select the classes that receive this assignment.  

    • Please note: if you delete an assignment given to multiple classes in this way, you will delete the assignment for all classes.  To remove a class, edit the assignment and uncheck the class.  Alternately, you can create the assignment for one class and then copy that assignment to other classes.  For more about that, click here.

  • Assignment Name: Type a unique name for your assignment.

  • Category: All active categories will display in this list, even those you may not be using to determine your final average.  Make categories inactive to not see them in this list.

  • Score Type: Select points, percentage, or collected.  Points is recommended.  SCS does not use letter grades except S, U, N.

  • Score: Enter the total points or percentage for the assignment here.  Click the Extra Points button or Weight button to add those to the assignment calculation.  Make sure you are aware of the effect of these settings on the overall student average for the class!  

    • Please note: PowerTeacher Pro calculates averages based on points, no matter what you enter.  Using varying point values on assignments can lead to unanticipated results.

  • Count in Final Grade: Uncheck this if you do not want this assignment to count in the student’s final grade calculation.  You should definitely uncheck this if you use the “Collected” score type to just record an assignment was turned in.

  • Due Date: Set the due date for the assignment.  The assignment due date determines what grading period the assignment is placed.

  • Description: (optional) You can type a description for the assignment here.  Remember that anything entered in the description is viewable in the Student and Parent Portals.

  • Students Tab:

  • By default, all students in a class will be given the assignment.  If some students should not receive the assignment, go to the Students tab and click the Add/Remove Students button.  Uncheck any students that should not receive the assignment.  This will also remove the assignment from the student and parent portal views.

  • Standards tab: SCS does not currently use Standards-based grading.  You can disregard this tab.

  • Publish tab:

  • Publish Assignment: Pick the date when you want the assignment to be published to the student and parent portals.  

    • Please note: the only time Never should be used is if the assignment will not be included in the term grade calculation (ie. Collected Only).  All assignments that are contributing to a student’s final average must be published at some point.

  • Publish Scores: Unchecking this box will publish the assignment but will not publish the scores of the assignment to the student and parent portals.  

  • When all options on all tabs are set, click Save or Save and Close.
