How does PowerTeacher Pro calculate grades?

• It is important to remember that PowerTeacher Pro calculates grades differently depending on how you enter the score for the assignment.  This can produce unanticipated results in your gradebook.

• If you are planning on using total points as your grade calculation method for your quarter terms, you need to be careful how many points you give to each assignment.  All assignments should be based on the same point scale, otherwise you will essentially be  weighting grades by using different point values.

Consistent Assignment Max Points

 Grade Assignment Max Percent 100 100 100% 90 100 90% 100 100 100% 60 100 60% 350 400 88%
• Total points for all 4 assignments is 400 points.  Student earned 350 points.  350/400=87.5%

Varying Assignment Max Points

 Grade Assignment Max Percent 100 100 100% 9 10 90% 10 10 100% 12 20 60% 131 140 94%
• Total points for all 4 assignments is 140 points.  Student earned 131 points.  131/140=93.5%

• By making the first grade worth 100 points, it has effectively been weighted 10 times as much as the assignments worth 10 points.  That is what is bringing the student’s overall average up to 94%.

• Remember, PowerTeacher Pro does NOT calculate averages using the percentages, it uses the points.  Please consider this when you are planning out your quarter calculations and assignment point totals.
